Initially known as the Harry M. Ayers State Trade School, the Ayers Campus was founded by an act of the Alabama Legislature on May 3, 1963, and was named for the long-time editor of The Anniston Star newspaper. In 1972, the institution was designated as a technical college that offered students associate degree and certificate programs in such fields as accounting, automotive body repair, carpentry, childcare, computer and information science, cosmetology, general drafting, electrical, medical laboratory technician, practical nursing, surgical/operating room technician and welding technology. To eliminate duplication of courses, the consolidation of Gadsden State Community College and the Harry M. Ayers State Technical College was completed on July 8, 2003. It is now called the Ayers Campus of Gadsden State Community College.

In addition to the programs offered above, Academic Programs and Services offer general education courses that support all Gadsden State degree pathways and provides a foundation for students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university. Students may also pursue an Associate of Science (A.S.) in General Studies or an Associate of Arts (A.A.) in Liberal Arts, each of which can be paired with a concentration to align with their intended major at the transfer institution. These options provide a strong academic foundation and a clear pathway toward completion of a bachelor’s degree and beyond.
