Gadsden State to host Alumni Tennis Tournament

Gadsden, Ala. – Members of the Gadsden State Community College Cardinal Tennis Team – past and present – will meet on the courts of Gadsden Tennis Complex for the annual Alumni Tennis Tournament. Play for the doubles tournament begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 26. In the event of rain, the tournament will be rescheduled for Oct. 27 or Nov. 9.

“This is a great time for our former players to reunite and compete again,” said Buster Stewart, coach of the Gadsden State tennis team. “It’s also fun to watch our current team play matches against former Cardinals.”

Stewart, who has been the coach for 16 years, started the tournament 14 years ago. He expects to have at least 30 players in the tournament with every team from the past 16 years represented by at least one player. Those interested must pre-register by calling 256-549-8441.

Players are divided into two divisions – Division A for the more competitive players and Divisions B for the more casual players.

“Every doubles team will participate in at least two matches,” Stewart said. “Winning teams will participate in more, of course, until we crown the division champions.”

Champions of each division will win Gadsden State gift bags full of memorabilia, but there’s an even better prize in store.

“The bragging rights for the next year are the most important prize of all,” Stewart said.

Tennis fans are invited to watch the matches at the Gadsden Tennis Complex. There is no admission charge.
