Gadsden State Cherokee to host blood drive

Centre, Ala. — Gadsden State Community College’s Cherokee Campus is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a community blood drive from 11:30 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 29 in the academic building in Centre. All eligible donors are encouraged to participate and will receive a $10 Amazon gift card. Donors will also be entered for a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards.

According to the American Red Cross, the process of donating a pint of “whole blood” typically takes about an hour. Whole blood is the most common type of donation and is crucial for trauma patients and those undergoing surgery. This versatile donation can be transfused as-is or separated into red cells, plasma and platelets.

“One donation can save more than one life,” said Randi Wright, campus director. “The need for blood donations in Alabama is critical with the state requiring 350 donations each day. Currently, we are falling short by more than 50 donations daily.”

Donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental permission), in good health, weigh at least 110 pounds and be able to present a valid photo ID.

“The employees and students at Gadsden State Cherokee are proud to be part of this important life-saving effort,” Wright said. “We are excited to partner with the Red Cross as it aligns with our desire to serve and support our local community. By hosting this event, we’re providing an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and area residents to come together and make a tangible impact.”
