Gadsden State's Cardinal Foundation names new Board of Directors president and vice president
GADSDEN, Ala. – The Gadsden State Cardinal Foundation has named Tony Smith as president of its Board of Directors, succeeding retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Eric Crabtree. The Foundation also elected Sheri Rollins to serve as vice president. Together, Smith and Rollins will lead the Foundation as it continues to expand scholarship opportunities, strengthen academic and workforce programs, and connect community partners with the mission of Gadsden State Community College.
Smith has served on the Cardinal Foundation Board of Directors since 2024 and most recently served as vice president. As board president, he will work alongside Foundation directors and college leadership to advance philanthropic support that creates opportunities for students and strengthens the communities served by Gadsden State.
"I am truly excited to step into this role and serve as president of the Cardinal Foundation at such an important time for Gadsden State Community College," Smith said. "Every day, our college opens doors, helping people take that next step toward a better future."
Smith said Gadsden State transforms lives by providing opportunities for students at every stage of life. From dual enrollment students earning college credit while in high school to adults pursuing workforce training, new careers, or university transfer pathways, the college equips students with the skills and knowledge needed for success.
"Through the support of donors and community partners, the Cardinal Foundation helps remove barriers and open doors, providing scholarships, strengthening programs, and ensuring that opportunity is within reach for students of all ages and backgrounds," Smith said. "The momentum at Gadsden State is real, and the need is great. Together, we can invest in potential, expand opportunity, and continue making a lasting difference through education."
Smith serves as Manager of Customer Service for Etowah and Blount Counties of Alabama Power Company, where he has worked since 1996. He has long been recognized for his commitment to community service and leadership, serving on the boards of the Etowah Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Etowah County, and the Etowah County Personnel Board. He also serves on the Board of Directors with the Challenger Learning Center.
Rollins currently serves as District Director for Congressman Mike Rogers (AL-03), a position she has held since 2007. She has extensive experience in public service, constituent relations, and community engagement, spanning a career of more than 35 years.
As district director, Rollins manages the Congressman's two district offices and oversees a team of six district employees. She also works closely with elected officials, business leaders, and community organizations throughout Alabama's Third Congressional District, fostering relationships across the district's 11 counties. Her extensive network and collaborative leadership will help strengthen the Foundation's partnerships throughout the region.

The Foundation also expressed its appreciation to Crabtree for his dedicated leadership and service as board president. During his tenure, the Foundation continued to strengthen its support for student success and philanthropic initiatives benefiting Gadsden State.
The Cardinal Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization that supports Gadsden State Community College through private gifts and community partnerships. Foundation support provides scholarships, enhances academic and workforce development programs, funds special initiatives, and helps remove financial barriers for students across the College's service area.
