Gadsden State, ACCS team up to offer free fire training

Gadsden, Ala. — Gadsden State Community College and the Alabama Community College System are sponsoring training sessions focused on fire extinguisher and fire safety. The training is free.

There will be three, two-hour sessions offered on May 31 at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Training will take place in Room 213 in Helderman Hall on the Wallace Drive Campus.

The course will instruct participants on the selection, use and safety considerations of fire extinguishers when utilized for a fire emergency. It also includes safety considerations for fire evacuations as well as personal safety actions that can mitigate possible injury during evacuations. Below is the course agenda:

Hour 1 of Training

  • PowerPoint presentation and discussion of the following topics:
    • Science of fire and fire components
    • Types of fires and fire fuels
    • Fire extinguisher types and identification methods
    • Rules for fighting fires with extinguishers
    • Principles of fire evacuation
    • Personal safety measures during fires

Hour 2 of Training

  • Hands-on training and extinguisher deployment, including these exercises:
    • Extinguishing live fires (training pan and live materials)
    • Fire extinguishing operations (single and team deployment)

The hands-on course requires the carrying and deployment of a working fire extinguisher. Safety equipment will be provided and must be worn during the training. Live fires will be extinguished on a training burn pan and some live materials.

The course will be conducted by Christopher Martin with the ACCS Public Safety Division. Completers will receive a certificate from the ACCS Public Safety Division and a certificate from the Alabama Fire College.
