Gadsden State Police Department to host law enforcement trainings
Gadsden, Ala. — The Gadsden State Community College Police and Public Safety Department is hosting three upcoming training courses open to law enforcement officers. Each training includes continuing education credits.
“Our top priority is ensuring the safety and security of our communities through training and preparedness,” said Chief Jay Freeman of Gadsden State’s Police and Public Safety Department. We strive to equip our officers with the essential skills to effectively handle emergencies by hosting advanced training courses.”
On May 30, a course in advanced first aid and tactical medicine will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 109 of Helderman Hall on the Wallace Drive Campus. The training covers instruction on stopping bleeding; performing rescue breathing; assessing trauma; providing triage as well as self-care and buddy-care; and equipment needs.
The advanced first aid and tactical medicine training is free and sponsored by Gadsden State. It includes six hours of CEU credits. To register, email Freeman at jfreeman@gadsdenstate.edu.
The Alabama Community College System is providing free state-funded advanced active shooter exercise and training from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 7 in the Beck Conference Center on the Wallace Drive Campus. Lunch will be provided.
Exercises will be conducted in single officer and multiple officer responses to active shooters; medical response to victims; mechanical breaching; critical decision-making; and bus assault. Participants should wear duty gear and body armor. No loaded weapons, ammo or taser devices allowed. Please leave weapons and ammo in the vehicle.
The training is sponsored by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Alabama, ACCS and the Alabama Fire College. It includes six hours of CEU credits. To register, contact Chris Martin at christopher.martin@accs.edu or 334.956.9641.
Gadsden State teams up again with ACCS by offering state-funded training focused on dealing with officer-involved shootings. The free training is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 23 at the Beck Conference Center.
The course will be conducted by Special Agent Dennis Smithee of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and State Bureau of Investigation. He will review many topics, including the myths and realities of use of force by law enforcement; statutes pertaining to use of force in Alabama; and use of force investigations.
