Gadsden State basketball teams begin Alabama Community College Conference Play

GADSDEN, AL – Gadsden State's men's basketball team begins Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) play this week after impressively navigating through the season's first two months, compiling a 13-3 record thus far. 

The Cardinals are fresh off a New Year's Classic trip to Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Ariz., where they split a pair of games.

Gadsden State defeated Yavapai College 83-72 in the tournament opener before falling to host Eastern Arizona College, 81-60. 

"This trip was more than just about basketball. It was about growth, exposure and the chance to connect with potential opportunities," said Gadsden State coach Deddric Tarver, whose team finished second in the ACCC North last season. "Our players have demonstrated remarkable dedication and teamwork this season, which is evident through our recent successes."

Gadsden State opens ACCC action Thursday at Lawson State. The Cardinals home conference opener is Monday, Jan. 13 vs. Wallace State Community College at Beck Gymnasium on the Wallace Drive Campus. Fans are encouraged to attend and show their support as the team looks to continue its impressive momentum.

The Cardinals are among the best offensive teams in ACCC Division I, averaging 85.7 points per game (2nd in conference) and shooting a league-best 49 percent from the field. Gadsden State is also the top rebounding team in Division I.

Gadsden State sophomore Mekhi Fitts leads the ACCC in rebounds (9.3) and scores 14.3 points per game, which is good for sixth in the league. Keshawn Watkins adds 13.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.

Three other Cardinals are averaging double figures: Demarreon Barron pours in 13.5 points per game, Cristian Willis (11.3 points) and Giovanni Nannucci (10.4).

Meanwhile, the Lady Cardinals enter ACCC play with an 8-5 record, winning three of their last four games.

Their league opener is also on the road Thursday at Lawson State.

Freshman Tyla Tatum is scoring a team-best 10.8 points per game. Kamoriah Gaines averages 9.3 points and 6.6 rebounds. Kyla Torok contributes 8.5 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds.
